Learning through the lens of the big idea

Facing up to or overcoming problems and barriers increases possibilities in our lives is the big idea for the IMYC unit Challenge. It is one of a choice of 30 abstract ideas which provides the ‘learning rope’ for students to hold on to as they navigate through each six week unit of learning with the IMYC.  The big idea is the ‘lens’ through which subject learning is viewed, helping students to see and make connections across subjects and to consolidate their learning.

Middle school students at Beacon Academy in Jakarta recently began their IMYC Challenge unit with an entry point to remember.  The students spent the day with mouth painter Faisal Rusdi, who was born with cerebral palsy and is paralysed from the neck down. 

The students listened to Mr. Faisal’s life story and learned how he has overcome problems and barriers through self-belief, hard work and perseverance.  Then they watched the artist pick up a paint brush with his mouth and create his art on the canvas. 

Reflecting on this, students began to ask questions about the obstacles Mr. Faisal came across as he pursued his passion for painting.  The IMYC big idea helped the students gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the barriers Mr. Faisal faces on a daily basis and the myriad of ways in which he overcomes these challenges.

The purpose of the IMYC entry point is to engage students in a unit and should be a memorable and shared experience for them to reflect upon later.  For teachers and students at Beacon Academy, this entry point proved to be a excellent start to a great unit of learning: Visual Art teacher Mark Thomas, who accompanied the students, commented: “This is very impressive.  A very emotional experience.”  Returning back to school, students exclaimed: “We’ve never really experienced so much in one field trip!” and “This was the best field trip ever!”
